Tax discs – end of the road
From 1 October, you won’t have to display your paper tax disc on your vehicle.
You can remove your disc even if you’ve got some time still left on it to run.
You’ll still need to ensure your vehicle is taxed, but you don’t have to display the disc and you won’t get a new one when you renew your road tax.
New technology, such as number plates recognition, now allows the authorities to check whether a vehicle is taxed without the disc having to be displayed.
Buying and selling vehicles
From 1 October, road tax won’t transfer to the new owners. When you buy a vehicle, you’ll need to ensure you get it taxed before you use it.
Equally, when you sell a vehicle after 1 October and you notify DVLA, the tax won’t be transferrable. You’ll automatically get a refund for any time you’ve got left to run.
