With the General Election fast approaching, Citizens Advice Cornwall has launched its own manifesto which we want all political parties standing for office in the county to adopt.
As one of Cornwall’s largest charities, we see around 20,000 people every year with problems ranging from debt and benefit payments to employment issues and housing, so we’re in a good position to know what people in Cornwall need to make their lives better.
Among the issues we’d like to see addressed are the creation of a powerful Fair Work Authority which will tackle employers who break the rules, a cap on high cost credit to make sure no-one pays back more than twice what they borrow and protect post offices from closure so vulnerable people and those in rural areas continue to have access to vital post and banking services.
We’d also like to see a new government provide information, education and advice to people worried about the impact of Brexit on them and their families and end repeat assessments for disability benefits for people with lifelong severe conditions.
The next Government has a real opportunity to make these changes that can make a real difference to people’s lives.
