Business Development Officer

Citizens Advice Cornwall offers free, independent, confidential and impartial advice to everyone, covering areas such as benefits, debt, employment, housing, consumer issues and discrimination. We value diversity, promote equality and challenge discrimination.

Whilst we rely on volunteers to take-on a wide variety of roles, the day to day management and organisation is undertaken by a dedicated team.

The service aims to:

– Provide the advice people need for the problems they face

– Improve the policies and practices that affect people’s lives

Hours: 21 hours per week, additional to be agreed where necessary

Salary: £26,000 – £31,999 pro rata dependent on experience

Responsible to: CEO

Peer relationships: Service Delivery Manager, Finance Manager, Communications Officer

Location: Local Citizens Advice Office in Cornwall with opportunity for remote/homeworking. A ‘hub’ office will be adopted for the purpose of travel expenses. Travel to other Citizens Advice Cornwall offices and meetings required

Purpose of the role:

Citizens Advice Cornwall is looking to increase the range of projects it delivers and secure additional funding both designated and undesignated to build resilience and sustainability for the service. The Business Development officer will take responsibility for preparing and submitting funding bids and designing, delivering and supporting fundraising activities across Cornwall.

The Business Development Officer will be able to demonstrate a good understanding of the aims, values and principles of Citizens Advice, and have an interest in our client work. The post holder will be able to work well as part of a team including Trustees, staff and volunteers, and independently from our offices across Cornwall. The post holder will possess excellent communication skills and be able to collaborate with the Communications Officer to provide press releases, newsletters and publicity material to promote fundraising.

In the first year, the expectation is that the postholder will raise sufficient funds to cover their salary. From Year 2, the post holder will be expected to bring in funds equivalent to four times their salary.

Main duties and responsibilities include:

Fundraising and Bid Writing

· Work with the CEO, Service Lead and Finance Manager to identify opportunities for new projects and bids and support the CEO in the preparation of proposals and submissions

· Liaise with funders and grant giving bodies to ensure Citizens Advice Cornwall is complying with funding requirements

· Identify and build relationships with funders, stakeholders, decision makers and influencers to support the preparations and submission of bids and proposals

· Work with staff and volunteers to identify opportunities for fundraising activities, prepare an annual programme of events and act as coordinator or support where appropriate

· Positively contribute to management team meetings

· Positively contribute to development of Business Plan and organisational strategy

· Encourage good teamwork and lines of communication between all members of staff and volunteers

Research and Campaigns

· To be aware of and ultilise research and campaigns work to the benefit of fundraising and bid preparation

· To alert the Research and Campaigns team to emerging issues

Public Relations and Communications

· Working in conjunction with the Communications Officer to promote the work of Citizens Advice service locally

· Working in conjunction with the Communications Officer to represent the work of the Citizens Advice service to other organisations

· Working in conjunction with the Communications Officer to further promote our digital services (webchat, text, email) to improve our reach to more vulnerable people

Administration

· Ensure the effective and efficient operation of our administrative systems

General

· Keep up to date with Citizens Advice aims, policies and procedures and ensure these are followed

· Keep up to date with charity policies, procedures and have an understanding and awareness of current client issues

· Ensure the work reflects and supports Citizens Advice service equality and diversity strategy

· Abide by health and safety guidelines and share responsibility for our own health and safety and that of the wider team

· Develop and maintain effective administration systems and records relevant to the role

· Monitor and evaluate activities appropriate to the role and contribute to the service planning process by providing regular reports and feedback on areas of responsibility

Personal skills and qualities:

· The ability to commit to and work within the aims, principles and policies of the Citizens Advice service and the vision of Citizens Advice Cornwall

· Understanding of the voluntary and community sector and the challenges and opportunities facing the sector

· Proven ability to successfully develop and propose ideas, take feedback and subsequently design and deliver agreed activities

· Proven ability of successfully creating powerful propositions including bid writing and presentations

· Proven ability of successful fundraising and income generation

· Strong event management skills including planning, costing, communication and event delivery

· Ability to engage, influence and inspire others in the aims, principles, activities and outcomes through a variety of communication methods

· Experience of project development and project management

· Ability to monitor project development and activities against targets and produce appropriate reports

· Proven ability to prioritise effectively, to multi-task and cope well under pressure to meet deadlines

· Willingness to work flexibly to meet the demands of the role

· Ability to create a positive working environment in which equality and diversity are well managed, dignity at work is upheld and staff and volunteers are empowered and motivated to do their best

· Ability to use IT packages including Microsoft Word (Word, Excel, Powerpoint) or similar, planning or database packages and the ability to use email and maintain an electronic diary. Experience with Citizens Advice systems (Casebook, Advisernet, Cablink, Adviceline) to extract data is useful but not essential.

· Commitment to reflective performance and continuing professional development

· Ability to travel and work across Cornwall
