Volunteering with Citizens Advice

We can all face problems that seem complicated or intimidating and it can be difficult and stressful trying to work things out alone.

Nationally, Citizens Advice, have 21,300 highly trained volunteers who are invaluable to delivering our service and helping people find a way forward with the problems they face, and campaigning for changes to unfair policies and practices.

Getting involved

There are so many ways to get involved, from admin, fundraising,  and trusteeship, to helping our clients find the information and advice they need. Our volunteers give confidential advice online, over the phone, and in person, to help our clients resolve their problems.

Our volunteers help us deliver services across Cornwall.

£WiseUp Administrator

Citizens Advice Cornwall is a registered charity and offers free, independent, confidential and impartial advice to everyone, covering areas such as benefits, debt, employment, housing, consumer issues and discrimination.

Citizens Advice Cornwall is looking to recruit a £WiseUp Administrator.  

The Financial Capabilities Project is a 2-year pilot programme part funded by European Social Fund.

The successful candidate will be expected to support the project leads in North, South and East Cornwall, by providing consistent, accurate and flexible administration support, including maintaining diaries, booking appointments, and venues.

For this role, you will be able to demonstrate that you: 

  • Have current experience of working in a busy administrator role.
  • Work cooperatively and enjoy being part of team that is focused on the delivery of project goals.
  • Excellent and demonstrable experience of MicroSoft Office.
  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills.
  • Great organisational and planning skills with an ability to prioritise workloads.
  • To be respectful, patient, adaptable and confidential.
  • To remain calm and professional especially when under pressure.

Head of Operations

Citizens Advice Cornwall is looking to recruit a Head of Operations 

This is an exciting and new role at Citizens Advice Cornwall, you will be working closely with the CEO. The role will be to help ensure that effective and efficient delivery of operational activity throughout the organisation, playing a key role in strategic development and planning service delivery. Helping to build, motivate and strengthen our senior management team.

To be Successful and Satisfied in this role: 

  • You will need to demonstrate abilities in translating strategic objectives into a coherent organisational plan, driving delivery through effective performance monitoring and management.
  • You will be a self-aware leader of people with great interpersonal communication skills and with the drive to achieve high standards in a team environment of volunteers and paid staff.
  • Being able to confidently and consistently motivate, coach, facilitate continuous learning within the teams they lead.
    You will be responsible for monitoring health and safety and managing risk within the organisation and raising solution focused awareness of new and developing areas of concern.
  • Being able to demonstrate a good track record of building and maintaining external partnerships that reflect the values and standards that make the organisation a trusted source for our clients.
  • Be fully familiar and able to be able to demonstrate that you are familiar with strategic operational financial management e.g., partnership funding, development of budgets, forecasting and job costing.

Energy Adviser & Champion

Citizens Advice Cornwall is looking to recruit an Energy Adviser & Champion 

(Subject to Funding)

Citizens Advice Cornwall is looking to recruit an Energy Adviser and Champion for 15 hours a week to provide advice and guidance to clients on how best to manage their energy, including energy saving initiatives, understanding the benefits of switching suppliers and how to do it.  Some home visits may be required when it is safe to do so.

To succeed in this role, you will need:

  • The successful candidate will be someone that can work with individuals but may also be comfortable holding information sessions for small groups.
  • Current experience of advice work including issues involved in interviewing clients.
  • Current energy qualifications or willingness to work towards.
  • Experience of providing energy advice and dealing with fuel poverty
  • Experience of working without supervision, managing own workload and achieving pre-agreed targets
  • Ability to give and receive feedback objectively and sensitively and a willingness to challenge constructively.
  • Good understanding of safeguarding principles and willingness to adhere to them.
  • Good understanding of confidentiality and data protection principles.
  • Ability to use and learn how to use new IT systems and packages, and electronic resources in the provision of advice, record keeping and document production.
  • Ability to analyse and interpret complex information.
  • Ability and willingness to work as part of a team and self-motivated.
  • Ability to prioritise workload and meet deadlines.
  • Excellent interpersonal, communication and presentation skills.

£WiseUp Project Lead

Citizens Advice Cornwall is looking to recruit a £WiseUp Project Lead for South & East Cornwall.

The Financial Capabilities Project is a 2-year pilot programme funded by European Social Fund through Community Led Local Development. Providing money management and financial awareness training to young people not in employment, education or training and young people leaving care in deprived areas within the Atlantic and Moor and South East Cornwall areas.

To succeed in this role, you will need:

  • Recent financial capabilities advice experience.
  • Current experience of delivering training and 1:1 support and guidance in a variety of ways to both small and large groups.
  • Demonstrable team coaching and supervision experience.
  • Ensure that all administration is carried out to a high standard, and that accurate performance monitoring statistics and reports are delivered on time and to specification to meet contract and funder deadlines.
  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills.
  • Fully familiar with Microsoft Office, e.g., Teams, PowerPoint, Word, Outlook, record keeping and the production of training materials.
  • To be respectful, patient, adaptable and confidential.
  • An understanding of safeguarding principles, confidentiality and data protection principles.

Volunteer Social Media & Marketing

We are looking for an enthusiastic and creative Volunteer to help with our Social Media Marketing within the Communications Team to promote our charity on social media, increase our reach into the community and raise our fundraising profile.  This is a great opportunity for someone looking to gain further experience in this field or use their skills within a charity that undertakes a wide variety of worthwhile work in our communities.

The role would include working with the Communications Officer to develop a long-term social media plan across Twitter, Facebook and Instagram and other social networks as appropriate.  Content must be in line with Citizens Advice guidance whilst highlighting our local connections.  Content must be engaging and demonstrate the work of Citizens Advice Cornwall to our followers whilst raising our presence on social media.

  • The volunteer will also work with the Business Development officer to develop fundraising campaigns and events.
  • The role will take up to 15 hours per week
  • We will agree a location with the successful volunteer
